H1N1 case confirmations continue to increase, but at a rate that suggests a plateau of the disease transmission. 2500 cases have now been identified in 25 countries. North America continues to report the highest number of cases, with 1204 identified in Mexico and 896 in the United States.
The efforts to decrease the infection transmission appear to be successful. In a recent presentation, the Director General of the World Health Organization pointed out that as a result of discipline and preparation for the threatened avian flu pandemic, the world is well prepared and well stocked to contend with any pandemic strain. Medications and supplies have been manufactured and stockpiled around the globe. Concerns regarding shortages in essential resources, which had been feared in 2004 and 2005, seem to have been put to rest.
The severity of disease continues to be milder than the illness that was originally experienced last month in Mexico. As this outbreak matures, authorities will be better able to make predictions of what to expect in the coming months.
